Using the Playstation 3 (PS3) solely as a blu-ray player?

In all honesty, yes. It's one of the cheapest and best available, plus you can store Blu-Rays, DVDs, music etc. on it. And you can always use it to play exclusive games like Uncharted 2 if you want. So yeah, go for it.
