A question to all Buddhists?

Why do Buddhist monks recite incantations? The Buddha did not say any incantations when he was on his way to enlightenment so why do the present monks chant these incantations? To my belief, it doesn't help them reach Nirvana faster. I am also a Buddhist and I have been pondering about this question for quite some time.
