How do I stop my dog from barking when I come home?

My dog, a little tiny Pomeranian, barks incessantly when I come home until I go and see her and greet her. It is so annoying because when she barks, she hits octaves that would make any soprano opera singer jealous. It's so high pitched and so loud and it gives me a splitting headache so to stop it, I go and hold her to make her shut up. I know this is only reinforcing the behavior but I don't know what to do to make her stop without going and holding her. Any ideas?
